14. The Life That Lies Beneath by Irene Pagram

Medium: Mixed media. Repurposed botanically-dyed paper, fibres, sinamay, wire, wrapped LED filament.

Height: 200 cm

Artist’s Statement: Mycelium, mostly unseen thread-like fungal hyphae growing under the surface.  Thriving in the dark, embracing the roots of each tree, constantly sending tiny electrical pulses to alert the forest to sunlight, nutrients, nearby plants, predators, damage. If we could see this in 'super slow time' the way a tree does, the ground beneath us would glow with myriad lights to rival the galaxy above.
