Newk - The John Newcombe Story

Join us to celebrate the life of Australian tennis champion John Newcombe in a grand slam of a story where rest is secondary and appetite for life never disappears.

Set in 2014 at Newcombe’s 70th birthday in Sydney, Newk chronicles the journey from naïve 1960s schoolboy, to the number one tennis player in the world in the 1970s, to his time as Davis Cup Captain and to the stroke he suffered in 2003.

Both a drama and a comedy, Australian comedian Damian Callinan portrays a highly determined and ambitious man burning through a rapidly-changing world. The play exposes the exhausting schedules and volatile off-court politics that even the players of yesteryear endured as the game moved into full-blown professionalism.

The play also captures hilarious moments from some of Newcombe’s numerous business enterprises including Cinzano, Queensland Bananas, and those famous K-Tel tennis instruction albums.

A must-see for all tennis fans.
