More about Meaghan Shelton

Artist Biography - Meaghan Shelton

Meaghan Shelton is a transdisciplinary Visual Artist, curator/educator-collaborator. Her practice traverses fashion, photography, painting, sculpture and community engagement to unlace art historical narratives of the ways in which women and nature have been represented in the domestic sphere. Her practice draws the threads of women's experience across time to access ancestral knowledge beyond the realms of personal identity toward an immersive transpersonal, deep connection to self and nature.

This creative process accessed via her practice unravels historical conflations of both woman and nature as culture's Others. In re- crafting connections between women and nature she redresses inner landscapes of the feminine as place. Meaghan merges the aesthetic languages of painting and sculpture to express the tactile, utilitarian aspects of craft practices as conduits for the organic process of creative practice. She considers autoethnography as a reparative, decolonizing lens conjoined with intersectional feminism to untie the diasporic threads of her Anglo-Celtic/Australian heritage. A multiple award-winning artist, Meaghan exhibits nationally, her work is held in both public- including commissioned work for the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, and private collections in Australia and overseas. She is the recipient of multiple residencies and grant awards including a 12-month Warner Brothers artist in Residence Gold Coast QLD and the prestigious Arts Queensland Showcase Award 2018. Most recently she was awarded the Du Rietz Art Prize for painting Gympie Regional Gallery S.E. Queensland 2023, the Dorothy Birt Award Scholarship 2023 Queensland University of Technology Brisbane, she was also awarded the Du Rietz Sculpture Prize in 2019. In 2022 Lorne Community Connect, with the support of the Surf Coast Shire Covid Recovery Grant, appointed Meaghan to create a pilot residency to establish an ongoing artist-in-residence program in Lorne. Amongst her curatorial invitations- Rites of Passage 2019, most recently co-curator for the international exhibition Unconnected Yet- Lorne, and Stilling Time, Sensing Place Photographic Prize and Exhibition.
